Week 24 Edition 26
Effective Altruism Conference
Went down to Melbourne for an EA conference. EA is a lot more diverse than I thought! Artificial intelligence, Animal rights, medical research, politics, job/career advice, etc. I met an ex-actuary who gave me advice about where impact was hiding in the actuarial world.
Rob Wiblin comes to visit
Also Rob Wiblin, one of the big names in EA, came to visit. He held an 80,000 hours workshop and also we just hung out too.
My friend went to Chicago
I made a friend. Then she went back to Chicago. FIN.
I’m probably going to Kenya
Thanks for your advice, those who gave me advice. Kenya and Tanzania. Let me know if you know things to do there.
I’m planning on going to cooking classes
Idk what cuisine yet. But I’d like to learn vegetarian recipes too.
I need to meet more actuaries in Sydney
So that I can know what’s going on in the industry and what interesting things people are doing. Does anyone know anyone in Sydney?
The Last Grad
to stop wearing suits. Everyone else has gone to smart casual, and I’m still wearing suits – mainly cos all my smart-casual stuff is in Melbourne.
What I’ve been reading/hearing/watching:
- Mr Robot_2.0 (TV) – I don’t watch many TV shows, but when I do, I watch Mr Robot. If you haven’t watched it yet and you like conspiracy, fight-club-esque films then you should.
- Superintelligence (book) – About Artificial Intelligence: how close we are, how it could work, and why people are worried
- 80,000 hours (website) – How to find/choose/get a career which you will actually like. If you don’t know what you’re doing with your (professional) life, start here: We reviewed over 60 studies about what makes for a dream job. Here’s what we found.
- Population ethics (idea) – “Is it possible to make the world a better place by creating additional happy people?” If you think more happiness is always more moral than less happiness, then you think we should have lots of kids. It’s an interesting idea, but it’s even more interesting to try to explain it!
- (As an aside: If you think happiness is not always more moral than less happiness, then what exactly is your sense of morality based on?)
