Jaywalking Is Cool
If you ever want to cross the road, here are the laws around it:
1. You can cross the road whenever it’s safe if you are not within 20 m of a crossing (Section 235 in Vic, Section 234 in NSW).
2. You can’t walk on the road unless there is no footpath and no nature strip; or there is a footpath or nature strip but it is “impractical” to use it.
If you are walking on the road, then…
- Stay as close to the sides as possible.
- Face oncoming traffic
- Walk single file: Do not travel alongside another person

3. If you’re going to board a tram, you can’t cross the road to get on the tram if the tram is moving. If the tram has stopped, then you can cross the road. (Section 233 in Vic, Section 233 in NSW)
4. In Victoria only, if there is no pedestrian crossing, you can still cross at the intersection if the light is green. Section 232.
