We didn’t get labour day.
UoM Alumni Event
I went to a University of Melbourne Alumni Event. I knew some people who have moved up, and also met some new people who also graduated last year. Apparently Sydney has the second largest group of alumni – after Melbourne.
Finity’s Birthday
Finity celebrated its 11th Birthday (the principals bought out Deloitte in 2005). We got a free gift – a steel torch because the 11th anniversary theme is steel – and we went bowling on Friday afternoon. The Melbourne Office came to celebrate with us, so it was good to catch up. NZ came too.
Finity Umbrellas
Finity gave the grads large, bright orange, Finity-branded umbrellas. Sweet.
New Phone
I might be getting the new Samsung phone, mainly because I’ll be paying the same new phone or old phone because of the way my plan works. Feedback about the S7 welcome.
What I’ve been Reading/Watching/Hearing:
- Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality (book) – “an alternate universe Harry Potter fanfiction written by Eliezer Yudkowsky, an AI researcher and decision theorist.” What if Harry Potter thought scientifically about magic, and the plots which surround him. Very thoughtful, not too deconstructive, fun characters. I can barely remember the books, though.
- How Airbnb designs for trust (video) – First half: how was Airbnb conceived? Second half: how does Airbnb create trust? Both parts interesting. If I had heard about Airbnb in ’08, I would probably have passed it over as an idea and been surprised when it succeeded. So I want to understand it so I’m not closed off to opportunities.
- Forget university? 4 steps to design your own education (Tedx talk) – Bradley’s continuing saga to reshape education. This is one man’s experience of what he did well with his education. Some may agree, some may not. I mean, it’s Tedx, not Ted.
