Edition 6 Week 9
Mardi Gras
I went to Mardi Gras, which was happening right outside my house anyway. Met up with Monica (friend from UoM, now at UNSW) and Peter (leading the EA Meetups) and some of his other friends. It was very crowded! You can go to the end of the parade to get good visibility.

Malcolm being non-committal about marriage equality. Can’t have it both ways, Malcolm.
Oweek
Shout out to my friends doing things for Oweek. I’ve been inundated with invites to their events on Facebook.
Late nights at work
I’ve stayed late at work on Tues and Thurs. That means I can get dinner on the company, though, which has been nice. I am working on a project which is known for ballooning out and requiring a lot of time, so my resourcing has been changed so that I’m not put onto too many projects.
Where are your clothes from?
A friend and I had a fun idea of an overseas trip where we try to follow the creation of an item of clothing.

What I’m Reading/Watching/Hearing:
- Early Retirement Extreme (book, also blog) – This book challenging the current school of thought about income, spending money, and retirement. It promotes many sources of income, and questioning whether you need “big expenditures” (e.g. car, house, fridge). It’s a very philosophical book, and becomes practical later on, but both sections are interesting.
- The Life Changing Art of Not Giving a Fuck (book) – Didn’t really enjoy. This book is about saying no to things that you don’t really care about, so that you can focus on things that you do care about. However, it ignores many things that you don’t really care about that provide you with interesting options. Also, she swears too much :(.
- The Dip (book) – I did enjoy this one. It’s about what is smarter to do when things become hard. How do you know when to quit and when to keep working at something? This book explores that. It is very short and easy to read. The problem is so big that one could never answer it in a book, so I’m grateful that it’s so short.
- Elizabeth and Mary (podcast) – A 30(?)ish woman decides to give her kidney to a stranger. She chooses a 65(?)ish woman. Strangers is brilliant in understanding these people and their motivations and identities. This is a series of three podcasts that happen over the course of Elizabeth’s decision to donate, so we get to see how their views change, and how the listeners react to Elizabeth’s decision.
