Edition 5 Week 8

Trying to Prioritise

I am trying to figure out how to use my time outside of pure work. I have the following goals:

  1. Programming – Program every morning
  2. Learn about Perils – Be attentive to opportunities
  3. Learn about Big Data – Be attentive to opportunities
  4. Do something Effectively Altruistic – Be attentive to inspiration through EA meet-ups
  5. Partner with Invest for Charity – No
  6. Photography – No
  7. Blog – Write once per day??
  8. Learn Chinese – Unsure??

Still looking for advice/thoughts about how to manage time and choose what to do!

I Went To The Beach

A friend from work drove me around Sydney to show me the beach and the view, and it was nice (albeit cloudy) but I was content, not inspired. Either I need to be more present, or less concerned with experiencing new places.

I also bought thongs for the first time.

No work then lots of work

I had a very relaxed first three days this week. On Thursday I told the resourcing staff that I needed more work, and suddenly I’m very busy! I may have bitten off more than I can chew now, so I need to talk to resourcing again.

People getting sick at work

A lot of people have gotten sick at work. I am also sick, but never bad just prolonged.

Effective Altruism Meet-Up

Third meet-up this time around. Smaller groups of people meant I felt more comfortable discussing. There are very interesting people there:

  • One ex-engineer wants to create a social enterprise which provides consulting about sustainability
  • Someone who wants to apply machine learning to find better batteries
  • One actuarial student who might switch to statistics
  • Someone switching jobs to Health Information Systems

First Grads Catch-Up

6 of 9 grads went out after work drinks on Friday to get pasta. It was great! We just talked, so not much to report.

Happy Leap Day

Take this day to tell all your friends about the Quantember Calendar

Grr the Gym aka Things Are Looking Grrrym aka Things Are Not Working Out aka I’ll Show You Noise Complaints

I signed up for the gym and was planning to go in the mornings. However, shortly after joining they announced they had to change opening hours due to noise complaints! I’m hoping to get some money back.

What I’ve been Reading/Watching/Hearing:

  • How to Email (website) – a self-written article summarising what we’ve learned about writing emails. I’d love to share in further detail the 2.5-hour presentation we got.
  • Creating Behaviour Change (website) – I’m becoming interested in marketing. This website is a really clean framework for how to improve it.
  • How Different Companies Deal With Your Data (podcast) – FiveThirtyEight takes us through how companies are working to protect your data from the Government and/or how it fits into their revenue model.
  • Letters from a Stoic (book – techically, letters) – an inspiring read about how to be content, what is worth pursuing, what is worth stressing over (nothing), and how to be proud of your life. Much recommended so far. Stoicism is a mindset I feel would have been very useful for me circa year 9-10.
