Edition 4 Week 7
Working
Work has been good. Everything is done on a project basis, and your main goal is around billable hours – so everyone is working on many projects at a time, and they need to record how much time they spend on each project. I didn’t have a lot of work this week, so I didn’t rack up too many hours but I think that’s inevitable.
Work goals
So far I’m on a lot of very classic general insurance projects. I enjoy seeing the intricacies of the individual projects (e.g. medical indemnity), but I think I also want to get involved in more programming: more R and big data stuff.
Managing time
I’ve found your spare time slips out of your fingers a lot more easily when you’re working and using your brain. I am trying to find a way to manage my many ambitions outside of work with work, and with my need to relax. Any hints are welcome.
Cooking porridge
I tried to cook porridge but mis-measured the amount of rice to stock (there aren’t enough measuring materials in this kitchen…) so I just made pretty soupy rice. And a lot.
Star Wars
I saw the latest Star Wars with Cal (previous MMI President), and Brahim (another MMI President) has also moved up to Sydney.
Qdiem -> Quantember
I’ve now renamed Qdiem to be Quantember. The origins of the name may interest you: it includes a revolutionary approach on calendars.
Coming back to Melbourne
I am coming back to Melbourne on the 25th March to the 28th March.
What I’m reading/watching/hearing
- Star Wars (film) – Good but not exceptional. I believe that it will be popular, so it’s worth seeing for the cultural knowledge..
- Less Wrong (blog) – A blog about how to think more rationally, avoid biases, and challenge your thoughts. For those interested, download the epub.
