Edition 3 Week 6
New Workplace
So I started work on Monday! The entire week was dedicated to induction and training, getting us up to speed with what the company did, how processes worked (timesheeting, admin., how teams are structured), and teaching SAS, Excel, and business writing skills. Actually working on stuff starts next week.
New Friends
The people at work are very nice and friendly. It is a fairly diverse mix of actuarial students, but we all get along very well.
Effective Altruism Meetup
I went to a meetup with other people interested in Effective Altruism. I mainly listened to people speak – which was very engaging and I learned a lot – but I need to get better at discussing ideas off-the-cuff.
Food
I’ve eaten at two great places: Easy Eight (popcorn-infused bourbon) and Umi Kaiten Zushi (sushi train).
Signal
I’m trying to get my privacy-concerned friends to download Signal for Android and iPhone. What does it do?
Signal uses an advanced end to end encryption protocol that provides privacy for every message every time.
What I’m reading/watching/hearing:
- Deadpool (film) – A regular amusing film. It will probably appeal to the people who want to see it, but I wouldn’t consider it necessary.
- How to Travel (article) – 21 quick, contrarian tips on how to travel which rejects a lot of the standard methods of travel.
- Emerson on Travel (article) – A brief essay about why travel is often foolish and unfulfilling.
- Less Wrong (website) – A huge collection of articles about how to think more rationally and realise mistakes your brain makes. Written in a very clear and helpful way.
- Eric Weinstein on Challenging “Reality,” Working with Peter Thiel, and Destroying Education to Save It (podcast) – A long podcast, but it covers many contrarian opinions by a man who believes in the need for contrarian thinking.
- Rule-breaking in children predicts future success (article) – A brief summary of a new, interesting study. Preliminary findings.
